Capsaicin 0.025% (Zostrix Cream) or 0.075% (Zostrix HP Cream)

Zostrix Cream is a topical cream that is used to treat painful joints. It does this by using the active ingredient capsaicin, a compound that is derived from capsicum pepper. Capsaicin reduces the sensation of pain in the joints by lowering body temperature and it achieves this by stimulating the cooling centre of the hypothalamus in the brain. There is a pain transmitting chemical known as ‘substance P’ that plays a role in the transmission of pain impulses to the brain and it is this substance P that conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis release into the joints, activating other compounds. When applied to the surface of the skin, Zostrix Cream works by reducing the amount of substance P in the treated area.

Directions for use

Apply a small amount of Zostrix Cream to the area of skin around the affected joint four times a day. Applications should be spread over your waking hours, with a minimum of four hours between each. A small amount of cream, approximately the size of your smallest fingernail, should be sufficient to treat a knee joint, with less being required for smaller joints such as the wrist or fingers.

Gently rub the cream in until there is no residue left on the surface of the skin. During the initial stages of treatment you may notice a tingling or slight burning sensation after applying the cream but this is quite normal. This is an indication that the cream is working effectively and this sensation will be gradually become reduced over time. This burning sensation can be more noticeable than normal if Zostrix Cream is applied less than the recommended four times a day. You should not apply Zostrix Cream immediately after having a hot bath or shower, as it can make this burning sensation more noticeable. You should start to notice pain relief within the first two weeks of using Zostrix cream. It may, however, take up to a month of treatment before Zostrix Cream achieves maximum effectiveness because Zostrix Cream works gradually.

Wash any excess Zostrix Cream residue after application, unless you are specifically treating joints in the hand.

Caution

Zostrix Cream is for external use only and contact with eyes or broken skin should be avoided. If contact with eyes or broken skin should accidentally occur then quickly wash the affected area thoroughly with plenty of soap and water. Do not tightly bandage an area treated with Zostrix Cream.
